Avilanian Lawyers Reaffirm Their Commitment to Ethics

On the commemoration of the ninth anniversary of the physical disappearance of the Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro Ruz, more than 70 lawyers and technicians from collective law firms in the province of Ciego de Ávila today reaffirmed their commitment as continuators of the legal ethics of the Historical Leader of the Cuban Revolution.

Through the signing of the Code of Ethics for Lawyer Members of the National Organisation of Collective Law Firms (ONFC), they ratified their willingness to promote responsible legal practice, which reflects the fundamental values of justice and equity, and fosters the welfare of Cuban society.

Celia Ynchausti Pérez, Technical Deputy Director of the Provincial Directorate of Collective Law Firms in Ciego de Ávila, expressed that the occasion is opportune to reflect on professional ethics, especially in the context of justice and the rule of law in the country.

She emphasised that in the case of the legal profession, ethics refers not only to professional conduct, but also to the commitment to truth, the defence of human rights and the pursuit of justice.

Cuban lawyers, she said, face unique challenges in their daily work, from the need to navigate a complex legal system to the responsibility of protecting their clients’ rights in an environment where freedoms may be restricted.

She added that in such circumstances it is fundamental that these legal practitioners maintain a firm commitment to the ethical principles that guide the profession: integrity, loyalty, confidentiality and competence.

Compliance with these precepts offers guarantees for promoting social change and defending human dignity, as lawyers are agents of transformation who use their knowledge and skills to advocate for those who have no voice and contribute to a more just and inclusive justice system.

Anabel Gómez León, Director of the Ciego Dos Collective Law Firm and a permanent member of the Ethics Commission of the ONFC General Assembly, underlined that the signing of this document responds to the organisation’s call to continue fulfilling the practice of law with ethics and good practices.

Rodolfo Veloz Tur, a lawyer and team leader at the Ciego Dos Collective Law Firm, expressed that the physical disappearance of Fidel marked the end of an era in Latin American politics and left a legacy that continues to generate debate.

Nine years later – he affirmed – his influence persists in Cuba and in the collective imagination of many countries, where he represents a symbol of resistance against imperialism; his life and work continue to be the subject of analysis and reflection.
