Five Avilanian collectives are part of the list of 42 that in Cuba will receive, next 16th September, the National Recognition “Ozone Depleting Substance-Free Entity”, as a prize for incentivising good practices and eliminating the use of gases harmful to the ozone layer and accelerators of climate change.
From this province, they will fête the Ciego de Ávila Branch Universal Warehouses and hotels of the Jardines del Rey tourist destination (Gran Muthu Imperial, Iberostar Origin Playa Pilar, Sol Cayo Coco and Gran Aston Cayo Paredón), devoid of refrigeration and air conditioning equipment that use harmful substances.
Livia Polín García, specialist of the Environment Subdelegation of the Territorial Delegation of Science, Technology and Environment, informed that these organisations, together with others from the country, will obtain the recognitions next Tuesday, in Havana, during the national act for the World Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer.
That laurel, granted by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (Citma), recognises the endeavour to advance in the compliance of the Montreal Protocol and the Kigali Amendment, aimed at preserving the referred natural layer of the planet and mitigating the effects of climate change.
As a signatory of these global agreements, Cuba implements the National Plan for the Total Elimination of Hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFC) in the stage 2022-2030, through resolutions of Citma; before the end of the current decade it plans to totally eliminate those gases and the one recognised as R-2.
Furthermore, in the Antillean nation work is being done to minimise the consumption of hydrofluorocarbons (HFC) in the period 2024-2045, with the purpose of reducing it to low or zero potential to avoid atmospheric warming.
In correspondence with international treaties and the intentions to develop sustainable tourism, during recent years Avilanian hotel and non-hotel facilities have advanced in the substitution of air conditioning and refrigeration equipment and other devices that use ozone depleting substances, for which they have merited the referred recognition from Citma.
