Born in Villa Clara on 10 November 1963, Leonor Borrell burst onto Cuba’s national team in 1979 at just 16 years old, heralding the emergence of a historic figure.
She became a Pan American and world medalist, earning gold at the 1979 Puerto Rico Pan American Games, recognition as top scorer at the 1986 Moscow World Championship, and bronze at the 1990 Malaysia World Championship.
Borrell represented Cuba at both the 1980 Moscow and 1992 Barcelona Olympics, cementing her status as a symbol of consistency and excellence.
On 17 May 2025, Borrell reached the pinnacle of her career with induction into the FIBA Hall of Fame – an honour that seals her legacy as Cuba’s greatest ever female basketball player. More than an athlete, she stands as a beacon of leadership and passion inspiring new generations.
