Harnessing Productive Potential Through Collective Effort

The President of the Republic toured production facilities in Cotorro and Habana del Este municipalities, emphasizing the development of productive linkages to address the country’s economic challenges.

True to his governance approach of working directly in the territories, as part of the second cycle of visits to Havana province municipalities, the First Secretary of the Communist Party Central Committee and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, began Wednesday’s tour at the Conrado Piña production unit of Poligom Rubber Enterprise in Cotorro.

This industry, specializing in rubber components for industrial equipment, supplies strategic sectors including sugar, dairy and power generation. Through innovation and the efforts of its 145 workers, the facility has maintained four consecutive years of profitability despite complex national and international challenges.

Enterprise directors explained to the President that their success stems from production diversification – manufacturing cleaning supplies, truck bed liners and flooring elements alongside core products – allowing them to overcome raw material shortages. Several items are sold at a community store, benefiting local residents while generating additional revenue.

President Díaz-Canel praised the workforce’s efficiency in critical tasks, including repairs at the Antonio Guiteras (Matanzas), Máximo Gómez (Mayabeque) and Ernesto Che Guevara (Artemisa) power plants. According to unit director Irán López Nieves, the enterprise generates annual production valued at over 20 million pesos through intensive work schedules and smart resource management.

The tour continued at the Aquaculture Technology Development Enterprise of the Fishing Industry Group. After severe difficulties, the facility began recovery in May under new leadership, already showing results. Specializing in freshwater species breeding and processing, the center also trains aquaculture technicians – graduating Cuba’s first class this year. Three key projects focus on fish nutrition, tilapia genetic improvement, and health standards.

The President urged expanding these aquaculture practices across Havana, given their importance for food sovereignty and production yields.

At the Moralitos yogurt plant – founded by Commander in Chief Fidel Castro – a nine-member team partnered with a small private enterprise to revive bagged yogurt production. The President later visited Pradera Roja dairy farm in Habana del Este, where recovery efforts since 2022 have increased the herd to 40 cows and five heifers, with plans for 60 cattle and small livestock development.

The tour concluded at Cuban-Canadian joint venture Coracan Beverage Factory (established 1994), where production now substitutes sweeteners for sugar and has resumed making Ergo Plus isotonic drinks for athletes in coordination with the Sports Medicine Institute.

Accompanied by Havana’s senior Party and government leaders, these visits reaffirm the nation’s commitment to grassroots economic solutions, strengthening enterprise-community ties and development strategy implementation.
