With the presentation of the grand prizes to the works Matriarcal Series, by the young artist José Villamarín, and Piélagos, a wood sculpture by the artist Darién Morejón Baños, the XXIII Salón Mi Gallo was inaugurated at the Hugo Cortijo Gallery in Morón. The event also recognised outstanding creators with collateral prizes awarded by cultural institutions of the territory.
The jury, made up of specialists Mailen Sánchez, Yury Limonta and Fidel Rangel, was in charge of evaluating the 37 works participating in this edition, from various municipalities in the province of Ciego de Ávila, and selected the winning pieces for their artistic quality and originality.
This exhibition, which is traditionally held as part of the Culture Week in Morón, has become consolidated as a space for stimulating artistic creation and a meeting point for followers of the plastic and applied arts in the region. Its continuity has made it possible to make new generations of artists visible and to consolidate established careers.
Academy graduates, art instructors, amateurs, several generations of visual artists confront each other in this gallery in a friendly manner and with no other pretension than that their works travel the «world».
The current edition highlights local talent with a diverse exhibition that includes paintings, carvings, embroideries and intervened photographs, representing the creative pulse that distinguishes the territory of Avila. In a context where culture continues to be a bastion of identity and resistance, events like this reinforce the sense of belonging and community pride.
The presentation of collateral prizes was in charge of various cultural institutions of the municipality, among them the Municipal Direction of Culture, the Sergio Antuña Library, the Casa de la Cultura, the Nicolás Guillén Foundation, the Caonabo Museum, the UNEAC, the San Carlos Cinema, the La Moderna Poesía Bookshop, the Sindicato de la Cultura, the Visual Arts Department of the Casa de la Cultura and the Casa de la Trova Pablo Bernal, who recognised the quality of the works that enrich the artistic panorama of Avila.
The fashion project Guayzad Frank, was livening up the Expo with an intervention full of good taste, and colourful identity of the city of Morón.
As a culmination, the popularity award will be revealed during the Cultural Identity event scheduled for May 24th at the Caonabo Museum, in homage to the 482nd anniversary of the founding of Morón.
