Despite fire damage, repairs to thermoelectric plant to continue

Alfredo López Valdés, director general of Cuba’s Unión Eléctrica (UNE), said Thursday that maintenance will continue on units three and four of the Carlos Manuel de Céspedes thermoelectric plant in Cienfuegos province, despite the damage caused by a fire in the control room of the six KV electrical panels.

After verifying the damage caused by the incident, the executive commented to the press that while the damage is being assessed, the necessary materials are being found to immediately start repairing this area – which is of great importance – because this room supplies the energy necessary for the basic services of the generating plant.

He said that one of the priorities is to achieve the supply of electricity to the thermoelectric plant, so that the maintenance of units three and four can continue and there are no delays.

He said that although a full assessment of the damaged electrical circuits is not yet available, they are still aiming to complete the repairs on schedule.

He also mentioned other similar problems in the country, which, however, were solved in a short time.

During the accident, units from the Ministry of the Interior and the Fire Brigade, together with workers from the thermoelectric plant, acted quickly and put out the fire, which did not cause any injuries or loss of life.
