With fairly close groups and the opportunity for professional growth for Avilanian players, the thirty-third edition of the Tomás Jiménez In Memoriam chess tournament has concluded.

Despite the economic limitations for holding the event and the impossibility, on this occasion, of bringing together foreign players, the Sports Directorate in Ciego de Ávila prioritised the competition.

According to the final results, the contest was closely contested. In the main section, Yadel Acosta Guerrero was proclaimed winner and undefeated, achieving 7.5 points out of a possible 10.

After winning the blitz category, Carlos Piedra Toboso finished second in classical chess with 5.5 points, half a point ahead of Esteban Álvarez Ruiz, according to the specialised website Chess.com.

The cultural recreational centre «El patio del mulato acelera’o» witnessed the strong contest between Yurislandy Hernández Elías and Dorian Román Baso for the throne of Group II. In the end, the former prevailed by a narrow margin.

Something similar occurred in the third group, where Yulbert Verdecia Martínez defeated Diego Fonseca González by just half a point, while Jordan Torres Orama won the double round-robin battle.

Under the Swiss system, the open section brought together 19 players. With an almost perfect performance, Marcos Abreu Vento achieved eight points in nine rounds and became the clear winner.

Although the country’s crisis prevented inviting higher-level players or organising an international event, as has happened on four previous occasions, holding the Tomás Jiménez In Memoriam has extra value for the Avilanian chess movement.
