The serious economic limitations have not halted all investments

Despite the marked economic constraints faced by the country, whose impact is reflected daily in the development strategies of all social and economic sectors, prioritised objectives have been determined in the 2025 Economic Plan which are, in turn, an expression of the Government Programme to correct distortions and reinvigorate the economy.

Directed in this period towards addressing priority payments (food, fuel, maintenance, recovery and creation of new capacities within the national energy system, medicines, national defence and security), their operational management remains extremely complex within a context of crisis administration.

This was described by Joaquín Alonso Vázquez, Minister of Economy and Planning, during the recently concluded Fifth Ordinary Session of the National Assembly of People’s Power in its Tenth Legislature, explaining that, despite these circumstances, results were achieved in some first-order programmes and investments.

Regarding food production, he detailed that the installation of 12 irrigation systems was completed to benefit the grain programme, various crops programme, and the coffee programme; and a rice dryer with a capacity of 9,620 tonnes began operating.

Furthermore, 17 hectares of aquaculture ponds were brought into operation; 20 dairy farms were rehabilitated, five of them for the recovery of 2,000 head of cattle, and the rest in actions directed towards infrastructure and livestock genetics.

Regarding tourism, Alonso Vázquez commented, work was done on the recovery of out-of-order rooms, concluding the semester with 225 in better condition.

In fulfilment of the Capital Repair Programme for fuel tanks, 2,475 cubic metres were recovered in six of the reservoirs.

Concerning the hydraulic programme, the Minister of Economy and Planning reported that one hundred kilometres of water supply networks and mains, and 12.3 kilometres of sanitation mains were completed, benefiting more than 700,000 people.

Additionally, 63 pumping units were installed, continuing the energy matrix conversion programme for this activity, which improves the water service for 68,698 inhabitants without requiring backup from the National Electrical System. To this is added the rehabilitation of 7.9 kilometres of hydraulic networks.

Furthermore, 104 railway units were capital repaired during the period, including 93 wagons and one locomotive.

Regarding the Housing Programme, he stated that 2,847 were completed, representing 53% of the semester’s plan. However, except for Holguín, he noted that no province is fulfilling the plan.
