Today the dawn arrived early and the sun has a special shine across the entire island because every September morning marks the beginning of the School Year in Cuba.

Early on the streets fill with colour from the uniforms of the different educational levels. Today there is a characteristic bustle of children, adolescents and young people heading to their schools, to experience the first day of classes for the 2025-2026 academic year.

Despite the difficult economic situation Cuba is experiencing, all pupils go with their uniforms, polished shoes, well-groomed hair and in their finest clothes to attend the celebration of knowledge.

Today across the country more than one million 700 thousand students begin or continue studies in Primary, Secondary, University education, or in schools for Arts, Trades, Sports…

Children and young people with mental, visual, mobility, hearing, speech deficiencies… have guaranteed places in Special Education schools, with all the necessary means for learning.

This year the Cuban educational system has hundreds of new teachers incorporated to work in preschool, primary and special education and a good number of retired teachers who are returning to the classrooms.

Despite the increase, they are still insufficient because each year sees an increase in enrolment, schools and specialities on offer.

Higher Education has increased its enrolment and thousands of students fill the classrooms of the Universities which exist in all the country’s provinces.

In Cuba’s rural and mountainous zones there are schools and teachers.

No Cuban child is left without the right to free education.

There are also teachers who carry out their work in hospitals to bring teaching to sick children who require prolonged admission and they also work in homes for infants with illnesses that prevent them from attending schools.

From today there is a new dynamic of life in Cuba because the light of knowledge fills the spaces where Cubans are formed with possibilities to reach the highest educational levels.

Knowledge, learning, are nourishment for the soul, the conscience and a superior society.
