To promote new paradigms in Cuban tourism management through respectful use of natural heritage, the Institute of Ecology and Systematics (IES) implements the Sustainable Tourism project across hotels in Cayo Coco and Guillermo.
This initiative, funded by the Global Environment Facility, commenced in 2023 and extends until 2029, aiming to integrate biodiversity and management systems for environmental sustainability certification of hotel facilities.
Yariannis González Villalobos, IES specialist and Sustainable Tourism coordinator, informed ACN of progress in applying best practices to landscaping by eliminating invasive exotic species and incorporating native flora.
She highlighted climate change mitigation actions including energy matrix transitions, adoption of clean energy, solar panels, investments in electrical savings, and implementation of low greenhouse gas emission practices in hotels.
The project also encompasses hotel facilities in Varadero, Matanzas.
