Seeking new horizons, outstanding baseball player Alejo O’Reilly joined Ciego de Ávila’s team in 1985 under manager Mario Salas – a decision that proved ideal, as it propelled him to the Cuba national team, where he reached his peak.
We recall his brilliant performances at the 1987 Pan American Games in Indianapolis and the Intercontinental Cup in Havana, where his contribution proved decisive. During the latter tournament, he achieved 21 hits in 38 at-bats – including 10 home runs – leading all batters with a .553 average.
Before joining the Avilanian squad, the distinguished first baseman played seven National Series seasons with Villa Clara, delivering outstanding offensive and defensive displays.
He ranked among the finest athletes of his era, respected for his formidable power: 240 career home runs, 910 RBIs, and a lifetime average above .300.
Unsurprisingly considered one of Cuba’s greatest left-handed hitters, he retired from active sport in 1997 before thousands of fans at José Ramón Cepero Stadium. Later, he served as batting coach for the Avilanian Tigers and managed the under-23 team. He passed away on 1 September 2022.
