Radio Surco: 73 Years as the Voice of Ciego de Ávila

Radio Surco went on the air for the first time on 10 October 1952, although with the initial name ‘Radio Cuba’. Its history is profoundly linked to the identity and events of the Avilanian region.

In the 1960s, the station adopted the name ‘Radio Surco’. This change, proposed by the announcer Roberto Aguilar Oliva, had a double meaning: the station’s strong connection to the agricultural sector and the physical ‘groove’ of the vinyl records where music is recorded.

From its beginnings, the station has had a firm commitment to its community. Even during the 1950s, it became a bastion of progressive ideas and was part of the protests against the government of the time, which earned it reprisals such as the closure of its news programmes.

In 1976, with the new political-administrative division of Cuba, Radio Surco acquired the character of a provincial station.

The station offers extensive news coverage on local, national, and international topics—including politics, the economy, and culture—which keeps the population informed.

Likewise, the quality of its announcers over the years has been fundamental for Ciego de Ávila to be known as the Capital of Cuban Announcing.

An anniversary message for its workers

On this 10 October, as Radio Surco reaches its 73rd anniversary, we extend the most sincere congratulations to each of the workers who make it possible for the magic of radio to reach Avilanian homes. They are 73 years of history, commitment to information, culture, and entertainment, built day by day by an exceptional human team.

From the announcers who accompany with their warm and professional voices, to the journalists who keep the community informed about local, national, and international events; from the technicians who guarantee the quality of the signal, to the producers and creators who make innovative and attractive programmes; from the administrative staff who support the management, to each of the collaborators who contribute their talent and creativity: all are fundamental pieces in the machinery of Avilanian radio.

It is the radio workers, who with their dedication, professionalism, and love for their work, ensure that this medium remains close, reliable, and relevant to the community.

They are the ones who, through the air waves, transmit the joy, sadness, hope, and reality of our people, building daily a space for encounter, reflection, and participation.

On this 73rd anniversary, we recognise and thank their effort, passion, and commitment. We greatly value their contribution to the cultural, social, and economic development of our province.

Congratulations and may you continue to reap successes! Here’s to many more years of Avilanian radio, carrying the voice of our people to every corner of the province!
