President of Mexico leads Independence Cry ceremony

The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, will today become the first woman to lead the “Cry” ceremony in this capital, for the 215th anniversary of the beginning of the struggles for independence.

“For the first time, a woman is going to give the Cry. It is quite novel,” said the head of the Executive recently when asked in her habitual meeting with journalists about the characteristics of the commemoration, until now led by presidents.

Although details of the act have not been disclosed, traditionally the ruler appears on the main balcony of the National Palace to wave the flag and ring the bell in allusion to the priest Miguel Hidalgo, who in 1810 called the people of Dolores to rise up against Spanish rule.

The president also launches a series of “vivas” and harangues at the end of a night that this time will be seasoned by the concerts of Alejandra Ávalos, the group Legado de Grandeza and La Arrolladora Banda El Limón in the emblematic Zócalo, considered the heart of Mexico.

The celebration will also reach other demarcations of the country one day before the 16th of September, the date of the Cry of Dolores, when the capital will also host the traditional military parade.
