Over 80 Topics Under Discussion Today in Parliamentary Commissions

As a prelude to the Fifth Ordinary Session of the National Assembly of People’s Power (ANPP) in its Tenth Legislature, its 11 permanent working commissions will analyse 86 topics impacting citizens’ lives and national development from today until tomorrow.

Many issues relate to objectives and indicators of the Government Programme for eliminating economic distortions and revitalising the economy. When assessing their fulfilment or implementation progress across agencies and territories, deputies will provide oversight.

Critical analyses of deficiencies and shortcomings reflect public sentiment gathered during monitoring visits by permanent commissions and the ANPP presidency across over 10 provinces and nearly 70 municipalities in the year’s first half.

Parliamentary representatives engaged directly at approximately 900 production centres, service facilities, and educational institutions with more than 40,000 people. Consequently, many agenda items address their concerns or demands.

Examples include actions to restore the national power system, food production and distribution, communication service quality, airport services, support for vulnerable individuals, and public transport conditions, among others.

The Economic Affairs Commission will review economic plan performance during the first half of 2025 and examine the 2024 Budget Liquidation alongside current-year budget execution.

Four draft laws – to be approved by the National Assembly during its plenary session starting Wednesday – will undergo joint discussion by multiple commissions today and tomorrow to enhance their quality. These are the future Law on the Cuban Sports System; the General Regime for Administrative Contraventions and Sanctions; the Civil Registry Law; and the Code for Children, Adolescents and Youth.

According to Marta Hernández, coordinator of the Parliament’s permanent commissions, these two days will also review the implementation of several laws approved in recent years by the supreme state body. These include the Land Waters Law; the Food Sovereignty and Nutritional Security Law; the Territorial and Urban Planning and Land Management Law; the Immigration Law; and the Natural Resources and Environment System Law.

The Fifth Ordinary Session of the National Assembly of People’s Power in its Tenth Legislature commences on Wednesday 16 July at Havana’s Palace of Conventions.
