Official Gazette ordinary number 26, published today, contains the new Law 180 «On the Civil Registry» and its complementary provisions, which updates a service of great sensitivity for the Cuban population.
At a press conference, Lisset Castillo Soler, Director of the Registry of Natural Persons at the Ministry of Justice, stated that it is a robust, modern law that simplifies processes and facilitates procedures.
The main novelty, she explained, is the creation of a single computerised registry, which starts with birth and ends with death, and chronologically adds data on the different legal acts performed by a person during their life.
She specified that each Cuban will have a single, permanent and digital electronic personal file, which will progressively eliminate paper, and the data will be protected through cybersecurity.
Castillo Soler highlighted that among the main achievements of the new Civil Registry Law — which will come into force within 180 calendar days, counted from its publication in the Official Gazette — is the creation of a single registry for the whole country.
Cuba has more than 300 databases and with the creation of a single registry, errors are eliminated and it is easier for personal information to be updated and protected, she stated.
She also emphasised that the new regulation makes error correction processes viable, the majority of which can be carried out by the registrars themselves, without the need to open a file.
She also said that old volumes are being scanned to be transferred to this database, as there are books dating back to 1875 and some are very deteriorated.
