With a pilgrimage to the place where Enrique Varona González fell, at Serafina and Street 5 in the city of Morón, railway workers, students, and union representations of this municipality commemorated the centenary of the vile assassination of the steadfast labour fighter.
The march, headed by the Music Band, followed by leaders of the Party, the government, the UJC, from the cultural sector, railway workers, Combatants and students from the Roberto Rodríguez Secondary School, departed from the Railway Terminal, a place where Varona waged important union actions.
After the placing of a floral offering before the plaque that perpetuates the memory of the distinguished labour fighter, Elízabeth Figueredo Orasma, Methodologist of Artistic Education, recited a poem of her own inspiration titled Enrique Varona, hero of the rail.
With emotional expressions, Yamiley Alcé Pérez, member of the collective of the Caonabo Museum of Morón, recalled the valiant union actions of Varona, who in 1922 was elected by his comrades, President of the Railway Union.
“In this same place, on a day like today, one hundred years ago, a shot rang out and a brave man, already dying, embraced his wife as if to tell her ‘I die for the Workers…’”
The commemoration was featured with patriotic melodies performed by a young music enthusiast.
Alongside other leaders were, Omelio Carvajal, member of the Municipal Party Bureau and Celia María López Reyes, President of the Municipal Assembly of the People’s Power.
Abilio Darías, organiser of the commemoration for the last twenty years, acknowledged the respect and admiration that the people of Morón pay to such a valiant union figure.
