Mexico’s party welcomes Cuba’s exclusion from US list

Mexico’s Workers’ Party (PT) welcomed the US decision to remove Cuba from the list of alleged sponsors of terrorism, which it believes it should never have been on.

Through a communiqué, the political organisation pointed out that the cost of this measure was very high for the people of the Caribbean nation.

In their opinion, Joe Biden’s administration had to recognise that there is no information to back up such a claim that Cuba is a sponsor of this type of violence.

He considered this to be a fair stance by Washington towards the democratic government headed by the island’s president, Miguel Díaz-Canel.

However, he warned, it is necessary to work in the short term to achieve the elimination of the economic, commercial and financial blockade that the United States maintains against the largest of the Antilles.

He recalled that last October, legislators from the Workers’ Party called for the elimination of this siege, considering that it violates the human rights of the inhabitants of Cuba, and indicated that the blockade is unsustainable in the current political times.

«From the PT we recognise the strength of the brotherly people of Cuba, who despite the adversities have moved forward with a spirit of solidarity and courage; we will continue in the struggle to eliminate the economic blockade of which they have been victims for decades and which has caused so much damage to the Cuban people,» he said.

The US government announced on Tuesday its decision to remove the Caribbean nation from the unilateral list.

In response to the news, Cuba said that, despite its limited nature, it was a decision in the right direction and in line with the sustained and firm demands of its people and government.

According to a communiqué issued by the Foreign Ministry of the largest of the Antilles, the decision announced by the United States corrects, in a very restricted way, aspects of a cruel and unjust policy.

It also denounced the fact that the economic war against the island remains and persists in posing a fundamental obstacle to the development and recovery of its economy at a high human cost to the population.
