Mexico’s Party Opens Collection Centres for Provisions in Support of Cuba

Solidarity continues to manifest itself today from various sectors and organisations in Mexico, including the ruling Movimiento de Regeneración Nacional, which has begun a campaign to collect food and medicines destined for Cuba.

«We are launching the national collection campaign for the sending of humanitarian aid to the brotherly people of Cuba,» expressed the president of the political party, Luisa Alcalde, in a message via her account on the social network X.

The leader also shared a list of the medicines, food, personal hygiene items and resources such as hand torches that are currently required, as well as the addresses of the collection centres throughout the country.

«Mexican Humanism is also solidarity and fraternity between peoples,» she stated.

Through the same social network, the Cuban ambassador here, Eugenio Martínez, thanked Alcalde, asserting that «the humanism, dignity and brotherhood of Mexico are demonstrated» and that the people of the island «will not forget the support and accompaniment» of this nation.

Yesterday, the Mexican Navy vessels Papaloapan and Isla Holbox arrived in the largest of the Antilles with approximately 814 tonnes of basic foodstuffs and hygiene items, having departed on Sunday from the port of Veracruz bound for the Caribbean nation.

«Today the ships arrive (in Cuba). As soon as they return, we are going to send more support of a different kind,» affirmed President Claudia Sheinbaum the day before, who has described the energy siege imposed by Washington on the island as unjust.

Groups such as the Colectivo de Solidaridad Militante Va por Cuba and the Association of Cuban Residents in Mexico are also calling on the population to support the largest of the Antilles with provisions, amidst a tightening of the United States blockade.

The North American president, Donald Trump, signed the executive order on 29 January declaring a supposed national emergency and establishing a process to apply tariffs on goods from countries that supply crude oil to the largest of the Antilles.

Organisations have warned that depriving Cuba of access to oil implies paralysing the country and the application of a collective punishment considered by international law as genocide and the greatest violation of human rights.

Various voices in Mexico and the rest of the world, from parliamentarians to movements and political parties, have spoken out in support of the Caribbean nation against the United States’ energy siege, described as cruel and anachronistic.
