In consonance with the perennial struggle of the Cuban authorities against the scourge of drugs, due to the grave social consequences they entail, an exemplary trial was recently held in Ciego de Ávila for two citizens who engaged in the cultivation and possession of marijuana (Cannabis sativa)

With adherence to the Constitution and to the laws, an oral and public trial was held in the Popular Provincial Court of Ciego de Ávila for a married young couple (man and woman), residents in the municipality of Venezuela, accused of the crime related to illicit drugs or substances with similar effects

Having evaluated the evidence presented during the oral trial, and having heard the conclusive reports from the parties, the court decided to sentence the first of these citizens to seven years of deprivation of liberty for the cultivation of marijuana, and his wife to four years of deprivation of liberty for hiding the plants

The law enforcement forces, during a search of the accused’s home, found 66.72 grams in three Cannabis sativa plants in excellent vegetative state

When passing sentence, the members of the Popular Provincial Court of Ciego de Ávila in charge of this trial corresponding to case 118 of 2025, took into account the social conduct of the accused, their personal characteristics, and the harmful nature of the crime in question

As is stipulated by law, both, as well as the Prosecutor’s Office, now have the possibility to file a cassation appeal, should they be dissatisfied with the sentence handed down

The consumption of narcotic drugs like marijuana causes organic and psychological damage such as alteration of the cardiorespiratory system and cognitive processes (attention, concentration, memory), depression, psychosis, anxiety, in addition to its harmful effects on the family and society in which children, adolescents, and young people are among the most vulnerable

This trial took place within the context of the IV National Exercise against Crime, Corruption, Illegalities, Drugs, and Social Indiscipline, in which actions were carried out in the Avilanian territory as in all of Cuba that constituted a space for comprehensive preparation to confront harmful phenomena that affect social coexistence
