The Federation of Cuban Women (FMC) will mark its 65th anniversary on 23 August with an extensive programme of nationwide activities that will pay tribute to three significant occasions: the 95th birthday of Vilma Espín, the 210th anniversary of Mariana Grajales’ birth, and the centenary of Commander in Chief Fidel Castro Ruz.
Yaneidys Pérez Cruz, member of the FMC’s National Secretariat and head of Ideological Work, announced today that celebrations will include visits to historic sites, exhibitions, workshops, and political-cultural galas. She highlighted several key events: the travelling exhibition «Fidel and the Women’s Revolution», homages to revolutionary heroines Haydée Santamaría, Melba Hernández, Fe del Valle and Vilma Espín herself, the issuing of a special 65th anniversary commemorative stamp, and award ceremonies for various competitions.
Speaking from the organisation’s national headquarters in Havana, Pérez Cruz also outlined additional activities planned for the anniversary: intergenerational dialogues between young people and founding members, discussions on social issues affecting youth, a colloquium on justice, and special events at maternity homes across the country.
The anniversary programme will further feature voluntary work initiatives to support food production, the opening of new childcare facilities, meetings with social workers, and activities at both elderly care homes and orphanages.
Teresa Amarelle Boué, Politburo member and FMC General Secretary, emphasised the importance of the travelling exhibition that will visit locations associated with all eleven of the organisation’s national congresses. She reiterated the commitments made at the most recent congress in March 2024 to continue developing public policies that benefit and protect Cuban women.
Since its founding on 23 August 1960, just months after the triumph of the Revolution and under the leadership of the beloved Vilma Espín Guillois (1930-2007), the FMC has been at the forefront of championing women’s rights and emancipation, establishing itself as a vital force in Cuba’s social development and the fulfilment of the nation’s most important objectives.
