Coastal Ecosystems Centre as Guardian of Science

Guaranteeing sustainable development in the Jardines del Rey tourist destination, the Centre for Coastal Ecosystem Research (CIEC) has established itself as a scientific institution supporting environmentally responsible management across hotels, non-hotel facilities, and auxiliary services within this priority sector of Cuba’s economy.

Coinciding with Ciego de Ávila’s designation as host for central activities marking National Rebellion Day (26 July), CIEC Institutional Communicator Claudia María Hernández reiterated their commitment to advancing this field, whose contributions underpinned the province’s selection.

Scientific Deputy Director Liset Hernández Galvez highlighted state and commercial scientific-technical services, including environmental monitoring, advisory support, training programmes, and ecosystem surveillance in tourism zones.

She specified environmental monitoring at facilities involves diagnosing external areas and adjacent beach sectors; analysing energy carrier usage; and managing liquid/solid waste and hazardous chemical products. These activities are conducted by a multidisciplinary team of experienced and emerging specialists across various research lines.

Their portfolio includes the National Environmental Recognition Framework for Tourist Beaches, evaluating coastal conditions and recommending conservation best practices for Jardines del Rey’s flagship tourism product.

During investment phases, CIEC conducts essential Environmental Impact Assessments. «Given ecosystem fragility, strict vigilance is required to mitigate anthropogenic effects, aligning with green tourism principles,» stressed Director Maikel Gómez Colina.

With visitors increasingly demanding environmental quality and responsible tourism development, CIEC’s scientific-technical work grows ever more relevant.
