Minimising the poaching of wild birds in the Avilanian municipality of Morón depends on joint work between several factors, an action which demands the adequate application of the law, confirmed Odey Martínez Llanes, principal specialist in Flora and Fauna in the Cayo Coco and Guillermo areas.
Martínez Llanes assesses the country’s economic situation as one of the factors most contributing to the increase in the activity, as well as the flexibility on the part of the authorities in applying what is established.
The rise in prices per specimen is a trigger for more people to find in the commercialisation of wild birds a way to earn money without taking into account the damage they cause to biodiversity, alleges the specialist.
He emphasises the poaching in the Jardines del Rey tourist destination and the exhibition of species in their cages in different areas of the city in plain view of everyone.
Martínez Llanes adds that it is necessary to act at all levels to create in people an adequate understanding of the consequences of this problem, so that it is understood that keeping wild birds in captivity constitutes one of the factors that has been affecting biodiversity for years.
