Boric criticises Trump at COP30 for denying the climate crisis

While speaking today at the COP30 Leaders’ Summit, the president of Chile, Gabriel Boric, criticised his United States counterpart, Donald Trump, for denying the climate crisis.

«Without going any further, President Trump at the last UN General Assembly said the climate crisis does not exist and that is a lie,» expressed Boric, who called for being capable of vindicating the value of science.

The leader declared that a decade after the adoption of the Paris Agreement, we must recognise that humanity has not been up to the historic challenge.

He recalled reports stating that if the temperature rises by two degrees, millions of people will suffer food insecurity.

«The consequences of not acting, of not fulfilling our own commitments, are the death of many, are the hunger of many, of people of flesh and blood who should move us, who should call us to action,» he warned.

The president invited countries to join initiatives promoted by the Head of State of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, such as the Belém Declaration on Hunger, Poverty and Climate Action and the call for integrated fire management at a global level.

He indicated that these disasters are a phenomenon that affects Chilean territory very harshly.

In his speech, Boric affirmed that Chile has implemented public policies to improve the quality of life of its citizens.

«Ten years ago we didn’t have any electric buses and this year practically 60 percent of the buses that travel through our capital are electric,» he said.

He also informed that the generation of electricity through renewable means increased from five to 35 percent in a decade.

«Chile is not one of the big emitters at a global level, but we also have to do our part, and we are advancing in that direction,» he expressed.

Belém do Pará was selected as the venue for the meeting for being the gateway to the Amazon, one of the ecosystems richest in biodiversity.
