Since yesterday, Wednesday, the Practice of Cuban Son is Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The delicious musical genre now swells the official list of recognition, coordinated by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco).
The news arrives to increase pride in the heart, due to a rhythm born in the eastern region of Cuba, which the great Ignacio Piñeiro, with resounding words, defined as «the most sublime thing for entertaining the soul».
The decision to grant Son its just consideration was broadly defended by a solid dossier prepared by its bearers, assisted, in turn, by the Centre for Research and Development of Cuban Music, the Cuban Institute of Music, the National Council of Community Cultural Centres and the National Council of Cultural Heritage.
Beyond the weighty endorsement, only someone who does not wish to see it could deny the happy effect of sonero chords on the spirituality of Cubans and a good portion of the world’s citizens, as they cannot remain static if they hear it, while chanting its contagious refrains and entering a state of genuine enchantment.
Son, Cultural Heritage of the Nation, is identity and enjoyment, it is «one of the foundational expressions of Cuban music, with a high degree of hybridisation of African and Hispanic musics», expresses the note issued by the Ministry of Culture, which announced it.
All who have lived Son feel, upon the recognition, the rejoicing. No one has expressed it better than that master tres player, our Pancho Amat, who has issued a message stating that besides Cubans, all who practice son are also celebrating, starting with our Caribbean brothers and sisters, who have contributed new shades, and also Europeans and Asians. «All who practice Son, those who sing it, those who dance it, those who listen to it, those who love it. It is a joy for Cubans to have given a genre that has invaded the world for the satisfaction of humanity.»
