Among the varied activities of Culture Week in Morón, the Caonabo Museum of this city dedicated a space to evoke the figure of Wilfredo Leiva Pascual, known artistically as Pio Leiva.
In front of a varied audience, with a predominance of young pre-university students, Lázaro Efrén Álvarez, an outstanding collector and connoisseur of the values of Cuban music, gave an overview of this son of Morón, who achieved renown as a Cuban singer and composer of traditional music.
Efrén, during his exhibition, showed photos of Pio Leiva as he walked the streets of this city, told anecdotes, and highlighted among his popular works a guaracha that immortalised him, entitled El Mentiroso.
«I had the opportunity to know him personally, to share with this artistic figure in many places in the city, which allows me to speak of his simplicity and his love for the city where he was born on May 5, 1917,» Efrén told the guests.
He also referred to the work of Juan Carlos Espinosa, who had the patient task of writing his extensive biography, published in a book that constitutes a valuable piece of history of the city.
Pio Leiva died on 22 March 2006, aged 88, in Havana (Author: Leonel Iparraguirre González).
