Yandy Espinosa opened Ciego de Ávila’s medal tally at the current 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games, in Santo Domingo, capital of the Dominican Republic. As in previous editions, his racquetball racket brings a bronzed metal back to this central province.

Together with Havana’s Maykel Moyet, captain of the Cuban team and multiple national champion, the Avilanian achieved the medal after overcoming the local team in a tight quarter-final encounter.

Later, in the discussion to reach the final, they found the Costa Rican pair’s game to be very solid. Moyet and Espinosa in no way made it easy for the Acuña brothers, Andrés and Sergio. The Cubans won the first set 11-5, but were then defeated in the next three (6-11/ 9-11/ 9-11).

Although the Acuñas conceded the title to Mexicans Rodrigo Montoya and Eduardo Portillo, Costa Rica demonstrated its strength within the Central Caribbean area. Of the seven possible racquetball medals at the Santo Domingo Games, the Ticos took seven.

Yandy Espinosa, for his part, once again climbed the podium of a Central American and Caribbean Games. From the previous edition he returned with two bronzes, including one alongside Maykel Moyet.

In the coming days, Avilanian participation will continue in the Quisqueyan capital through basketball player Rachel Contreras, cyclist Randol Izquierdo, members of the field hockey teams, among others.

At the close of 2 August, Cuba occupied third place in the overall medal table, behind Mexico and Colombia, at the Centenary Games, which will run until Saturday 8 August.
