Representatives of trova, bolero, folklore, cumbia and other genres took part in Chile in a Love Marathon for Cuba, in support of a sister country currently subjected to the ironclad blockade of the United States.
The Manuel de Salas secondary school was the setting for this cultural event, organised by the Association of Parents and Guardians of Graduates on the island, to raise funds for the acquisition of solar panels destined for various centres.
«This is the second time we have taken part, and obviously it is an imperative to be with Cuba, supporting its people, in the face of the ordeal caused by the blockade and the fiercest policies applied by Donald Trump,» Cristóbal Berrú, from the group Los Insobornables, told Prensa Latina.
«For me, it is not only a duty, but also a pleasure, a privilege, to be able to be here,» expressed troubadour Francisco Villa, who added that he feels indebted to Cuban musicians such as Silvio Rodríguez, Vicente Feliú, Amaury Pérez and Noel Nicola.
Also taking part in the marathon were Juanito Ayala, Cecilia Concha Laborde, Paloma Rodríguez, Pepe Cid, Manuel Huerta and the group La Shinculpa.
«Here we are sharing our songs, our voices, to unite with a very clear objective: to collaborate in sending solar panels to the island with all our love, affection and conviction,» bolero singer Carmen Prieto told this agency.
Elízabeth Molina and Melinka Lamata, from the event’s organising committee, explained that the aim is to contribute to Cuba’s ability to change its energy matrix towards renewable sources.
The solar panels will be installed in different locations, such as emergency services, hospitals and schools, Molina explained.
«So, in that task, we organised this musical marathon that brought together the musicians, the artists, who have always been solidary with Cuba,» she added.
Rosario Rodríguez, First Secretary of the Cuban embassy in Chile, thanked everyone for this wonderful activity, which, she said, is the way many artists show that Cuba is not alone, and that music and art are also with the Revolution.
