Venezuela Announces Commission for the Liberation of Nicolás Maduro

The acting President of Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez, announced today the creation of a high-level commission destined to coordinate actions of diverse types to liberate President Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores.

This commission will carry out political, legal and diplomatic actions to put an end to the kidnapping by the United States of the head of state of Venezuela and of Flores.

Such an announcement was made by the Minister of People’s Power for Communication and Information, Freddy Ñáñez, who indicated that the commission will be composed of representatives from various State institutions, to articulate a unified response in the face of a direct aggression against national sovereignty.

According to official sources, the commission will have as a priority to activate mechanisms of international law, establish contacts with allied governments and multilateral organisations.

Furthermore, the new entity will drive a communications strategy that makes the case visible in regional and global forums, especially in spaces like the UN and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States.

The Venezuelan government maintains that this situation forms part of an escalation of political pressure against the country and reaffirms that it will not recognise any action that violates the popular mandate.

The authorities of the South American country reiterated their call for international solidarity and for the defence of the principle of self-determination of peoples.

Caracas qualified the actions of Washington as a «most serious military aggression» and warned that the objective of the attacks «is none other than to seize the strategic resources of Venezuela, in particular its oil and minerals, attempting to break by force the political independence of the nation.»
