Lula to evaluate Brazil’s position on migration crisis with the US

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will evaluate today with Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira Brazil’s next steps regarding the migration crisis with the United States.

The UOL website reported that the meeting, scheduled to take place at the Planalto Palace, the executive branch’s headquarters in the capital, was hastily scheduled to determine the official position in the coming days.

Lula was informed on Saturday about the case of the nationals deported from the United States who arrived in Manaus, capital of the northern state of Amazonas, and complained about the situation because of the way they travelled.

He asked the Brazilian Air Force to send a plane to take them to Confins, a municipality in the southeastern state of Minas Gerais, which happened in the evening of the same day.

According to the news site, Lula’s administration wants to remain cautious about the situation of the Brazilians in Manaus, who reported alleged aggression and poor treatment on their return to the South American giant.

The government this weekend described as unacceptable and will ask the United States for clarification of the treatment of its citizens during the first deportation flight of President Donald Trump’s administration.

The trip, with 88 Brazilians deported, was also the result of an existing agreement between the two countries since 2017.

But this was the first operation after the inauguration of Trump, who promised a mass deportation.

The indiscriminate use of handcuffs and chains violates the terms, according to Washington, which provide for the dignified, respectful and humane treatment of returnees.

Brazil considers it unacceptable that the conditions agreed with the US government are not respected.

UOL recalled that this is not the first time that handcuffs have been used on a flight with deportees.

In recent years, Brazil has tried to convince Joe Biden’s government to abandon the practice.

So far there have been about 30 flights with deportees in the last four years. Now, however, the situation is not limited to the use of handcuffs and the complaints concern the general conditions of the treatment of Brazilians.

As of 2018, the Executive agreed to carry out repatriation flights to shorten the time compatriots are held in US detention centres for irregular immigration and without the possibility of appeal.

A note from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs states that it will send a request for clarification to the White House and that it «remains attentive to changes in immigration policies in that country, to ensure the protection, safety and dignity of Brazilians residing there».
