US authorities returned to Cuba this Thursday one hundred and thirty-six irregular migrants by air, in compliance with the current migration agreements between both countries, specified the Ministry of the Interior (Minint) page on Facebook
The group was composed of one hundred and twenty-five men and eleven women, of which four were transferred to the investigative organs for being alleged perpetrators of criminal acts before leaving the country, reported the Minint
This was the ninth operation of this type so far in 2025 from US territory, bringing the total to thirty-seven returns in the present year from different nations in the region, encompassing one thousand one hundred and forty people, of which nine hundred and ninety-nine are from the United States
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirms that the migration agreements signed in 1984 and updated in 1994 and 1995 establish the delivery by Washington of a minimum of twenty thousand visas annually for the legal emigration of Cuban citizens, while Havana accepts the return of those who leave in an irregular manner
According to the Foreign Ministry, these understandings constitute the legal basis governing the bilateral migration issue and have been the subject of periodic rounds of talks, despite political tensions and the unilateral measures applied by the United States
The Cuban government reiterates its commitment to a regular, safe, and orderly migration, and alerts about the life-threatening risks represented by illegal departures, while denouncing that the non-compliance with the commitments undertaken by Washington stimulates irregular migration and provokes unnecessary humanitarian crises.
