A special morning assembly at the Faculty of Medical Sciences in Morón, Ciego de Ávila, marked the 120th anniversary of the passing of Máximo Gómez Báez.
First-year medical students spearheaded the event, which highlighted the Generalísimo’s contributions to Cuba’s independence campaigns. The tribute emphasised Gómez’s internationalist spirit and solidarity, recognising him as the foremost strategist of the mambises wars. His leadership in pivotal battles—including Mal Tiempo, Iguará, Coliseo, Calimete, and Las Guásimas—was honoured, alongside his orchestration of critical operations such as the Reform Campaign and the East-to-West Invasion.
Máximo Gómez Báez was born in Baní, Dominican Republic, on 18th November 1836 and died in Havana, Cuba, on 17th June 1905.
