Tropical storm damages agriculture in Ciego de Ávila (+Photos)

About 800 hectares of plantains were knocked down by the winds of tropical storm Eta in the company of various crops La Cuba, in addition to others planted with yucca, pumpkin, and corn.

Orlando Pérez Pereira, delegate of agriculture in Ciego de Ávila, explained to the provincial Defense Council (DC), which occurred this Sunday, that other crops currently flooded must wait for the withdrawal of the waters to make an assessment of the losses.

He indicated that regarding the infrastructure only the cover of two cattle facilities of the municipalities of Baraguá and Bolivia, and of nine houses of protected cultivation in the zone of Ceballos were affected.

From next Monday, he said, it will begin the harvest of about three thousand quintals of bananas that remain on the ground, to be sold in the Avilanian markets and the country’s capital, while the most damaged will be used in animal feed.

It is expected that soil conditions will improve in order to proceed with the recovery of the banana fields from the small that were left standing, and in the same way, about 300 tons of rice will be harvested, and a considerable volume of corn, said Pérez Pereira.

According to the evaluation carried out so far, Eta also caused damage to some 130 homes, of which 11 collapsed completely and about 100 partial roofs, while leaving eight municipalities and 130,000 private and state clients without electricity service.

Daniel Pérez García, director of the Basic Electrical Organization in the province, emphasized that on Sunday afternoon only the territories of Florencia, Majagua, and Baraguá remained off, in some cases due to floods that prevented them from reaching where the breakdowns were, but it was expected that total reconnection would be achieved in the next 72 hours.

Tomás Alexis Martín Venegas, vice-president of the Provincial Defense Council, exhorted to work with agility in the pertinent procedures and location of the resources, to achieve with the support of local brigades, the total solution of the affectations in houses before the end of the current year.

The DC also knew that from Monday on all evacuees from the town of Júcaro, on the southern coast, will begin to return to their homes.
