19 percent of pregnant women in Ciego de Avila captured from January to September are teenagers, such index exceeds the same stage of last year, which represents a health problem in the territory.
Dr. Luis Carmenate Martínez, head of the Provincial Gynecology Group explained that municipalities with higher incidence of pregnancies at early ages of life are Bolivia, Venezuela and Baraguá.
The gynecology specialist also said that in this group of young girls ages go between 12 and 20 years, stage of life when the reproductive organs of women do not have the maturity required for giving birth.
Carmenate Martinez insisted in the adverse consequences of early pregnancy in health, among which he stressed the low birth weight baby, the increase of hypertensive disease and anemia in the mother during pregnancy, and the chances of major complications when giving birth.
On the other hand, Dr. Sara María Herrera Oliva, head of the Mother´s and Child´s Program, said that the sexual behavior of young people today is accelerated, as compared to earlier times, so preventing early pregnancies should be deep in the family, school and in the health sector level.
To combat pregnancy at early ages of life, workers of the Provincial Center for health Education and Promotion of Ciego de Avila, perform preventive actions in rural communities and schools in the territory, where they divulge the adverse consequences of this phenomenon, which represents a serious health problem in society of Ciego de Avila and worldwide.
