Colon minimal surgery was performed this Thursday at the Provincial Hospital Doctor Antonio Luaces Iraola of Ciego de Avila , the only hospital in the interior of the country where this type of operation is practiced.
The patient was diagnosed with adenocarcinoma of the descending colon, by colonoscopy and he underwent on a left hemicolectomy (removal of half of the colon).
The surgery was performed by a team of local doctors composed of surgeons Felipe Jorge Aragón Palmero, Félix Bandomo and Osmaldy Alpizar, and anesthesiologist Dr. Alina Rivero.
According to statements by Dr. Aragon Palmero the benefits of colon minimal surgery access are: a smaller incision, less postoperative pain, fewer complications, reduced bleeding during surgery, faster return to normal activities and shorter hospital stay.
This type of colon minimal access operation is performed only in some national hospitals of Havana and in the Ciego de Avila capital, which distinguishes the service of Surgery of the province, which demonstrates significant progress in the conduct of the minimally invasive procedure, which simplifies both large and traumatic abdominal operations of various diseases.
